Lillie was the oldest of five children and was sent to the Presbyterian School which was taught in the Old Ste House by two Presbyterian teachers. Mary E. and Emma Knox at the time Gay went to school. The school was abandoned for lack of support in 1895. At the age of sixteen years, Lillie Gay was sent to Oakley, Idaho to teach school. She taught music and became the organist of the Oakley Ward, having joined the Mormon Church. A year later, on March 12, 1889 at the age of seventeen she married James Alma Martindale. They lived on a farm and Lillie Gay continued to give music lessons. She often walked a mile and a half to give lesson to some child who was not able to come to Lillie home for a lesson. He husband's sister always gave Gay credit for there musical education. She had a very pleasant disposition and had a way of inspiring those in whom she came in contact with self confidence and the belief in the knowledge and desire to be of worth to the world in which they live. Ten children were born to James Alma and Lillie Gay Martindale: Edwin James born Sept 18, 1891 at Oakley, Casia County, Idaho, Lille Clare, born April 17, 1894, she was killed in a train accident., Sept 12, 1913. Marion Clinton, born April 30, 1897, died in Pocatello, Idaho April, 1964; Lelia Matilda, born May 8, 1900; Ora born April 30, 1902: Lyman Wight, born December 7, 1904: at Basin, Casia County, Idaho, the five were all born in Oakley. Lyman Wight died April 20, 1965: Leon Born November 1, 1906, in Basin Idaho. Elva May born August 24, 1909, in Basin, Casia County, Idaho, died April 6, 1916 in Fillmore, Utah. A still born baby born Feb 4, 1912; Etta, last child born June 30, 1915, Marysville, Utah. In fall of 1915, Edwin Bartholomew was very ill , he had one of his family write to Gay and ask her if she and her husband James Alma Martindale could come with their family and take over his big farm. The family of Gay arrived in Fillmore, Utah October , 1915. The took over the farm and were very successful in their efforts. Lillie Gay died January 24, 1941, and James followed her August 13, 1944. Both are buried in the Fillmore Cemetery.
