POTTER HAD KEEN INTEREST IN MARITIME HISTORY Portland Press Herald (ME) 19 May 1998 Homer M. Potter, 97, of Berrys Mill Road died Saturday at the Winshop Green Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since 1996. Born here, a son of Walter B. and Henrietta Potter, he was a 1918 graduate of Morse High School. Mr. Potter married Alice Dunn, formerly of Mount Vernon, in 1936. She died in 1992. He worked at the Pejepscot Paper Mill and then at the Quincy, Mass., shipyard before going to sea as an engineer aboard a schooner. Returning home, he worked at Bath Iron Works, retiring in 1966 as leadingman in the electrical department. Mr. Potter had a great interest in maritime history served as a resource for several local historical books, his family said. He also built his own Herreshoff sailboat. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, and was a member of the Kennebec Art Club, Masonic Solar Lodge and the Maine Maritime Museum. Surviving are two sons, David M. of Bel Aire, Md., and William D. of Woolwich; four grandchildren, Beth and Julie Potter, both of Maryland, Deborah Potter of West Bath and Matthew Potter of Boston. Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Marshall B. Hughes officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
