Baker (R.W. Baker), age 101, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 1:26 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at a local health facility. He was born Jan. 3, 1903, in Centralia, Mo., and graduated from, Centralia High School in 1921. R.W. married Nannie Mae Hackley of Fayette, Mo., on May 25, 1924. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 1991. R.W. and Nannie both graduated from Central Methodist University in Fayette. Later R.W. completed and received graduate degrees from Missouri University, Columbia, Mo. Surviving include two sons, Robert W. Baker, Jr. and wife, Wilma, Joplin, and Henry M. Baker and wife, Betty, Humble, Texas. Additional survivors incluede four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. R.W. and Nannie moved to Joplin in 1939 with their sons. He was vocational director and counselor for the Joplin public school system and developed the expanded Lafayette school annex to support training for the war effort. After the war, the Franklin Technology Center at 13th and Pearl was built and he trained many veterans under the GI Bill. R.W. served on many commiittees with state, local and union officials in developing specialized training to attract industry into the local area such as Pacific Mercury and Vickers. Later R.W. designed and developed the current Franklin Technology Center complex adjacent to the Joplin Senior High School and served as the director until retirement in 1968. After retirement, he continued his lifetime hobbies, gardening, hunting and fishing. R.W. was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was active in the nursery program for years. He was also a life memeber of the Lions Club and Fellowship Lodge No. 345, A.F.&A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church library fund. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellowship Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Fellowship Baptist Church, 2827 East 32nd Street. Rev. Steve Grace and Rev. Jack Jones will officiate. Burial will be at Hackley Cemetery,Fayette.
